Start with a coaster
Coasters are the ideal first table project. They are small, quick and use very little yarn, and they teach the same circular and motif techniques as placemats and runners.
- The spring flower coaster rated beginner uses a 2.5 mm hook.
- The quick flower coasters at about 10 to 12 cm are perfect for making a set of four or six.
- The bellflower coasters are rated beginner to intermediate and work on a 2 mm hook for a fine, crisp finish.
Once you are comfortable with coasters, a placemat is the natural next step.
Placemats and runners: sizes and planning
Placemats here range from about 38 to 42 cm for the blue chamomile placemat with napkin rings, to about 15 to 16 inches for the sunflower bee and lavender pearl fan placemats.
| Project | Typical size | Time to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Coaster | 10โ15 cm | Small, quick, great in sets |
| Placemat | 38โ42 cm or about 15โ16 inches | A larger project, times four or six for a set |
| Table runner | Made in sections or motifs | The longest project here |
| Napkin rings | Small bands | Quick add-ons to a set |
Table runners, like the blue daisy granny square runner and the daisy garden diamond runner, are made from repeated motifs. That means you can make them as long as your table: just add motifs.
Choosing yarn for table decor
Cotton is the best choice for anything on a table. It absorbs moisture, which is perfect for coasters. It also tolerates heat better than acrylic and washes well. Most patterns here use cotton or sport-weight cotton.
- Mercerized cotton has a slight sheen and shows lace beautifully.
- Sport or fingering cotton gives fine, elegant lace, as in the shell lace and pearl fan placemats.
- Avoid acrylic under hot dishes. It can melt or scorch.
Blocking lace placemats
Lace placemats really come alive with blocking. It opens up the stitches and makes the edges straight and even.
- Wet or mist the placemat with water.
- Pin it flat on a blocking mat or folded towel, to the measurements in the pattern. Pin each point of a scalloped edge.
- Let it dry completely before unpinning.
- For crisp lace, use a little spray starch after blocking.
Block every piece in a set the same way, so they match. After washing, block them again: cotton relaxes in water, and a quick re-pin brings the edges back to shape.
Caring for crochet table decor
Wash cotton placemats and coasters gently and lay them flat to dry. Avoid tumble drying lace, which can distort the shapes.
Seasonal tables and matching sets
Make a seasonal table set: flower coasters and the chamomile placemat for spring, the sunflower bee placemat for summer. For the holidays, the poinsettia placemat and napkin ring set is part of our Christmas collection, along with wreaths and ornaments.

Frequently asked questions
What is the easiest crochet table decor project?
A coaster. The spring flower coaster is rated beginner, and coasters use very little yarn.
What yarn is best for crochet placemats?
Cotton. It absorbs moisture, tolerates heat better than acrylic and washes well. Sport-weight cotton gives fine, elegant lace.
How do I keep crochet placemats flat?
Block them: wet or mist the placemat, pin it flat to the right size and let it dry completely. A little starch helps lace hold its shape.
How long should a crochet table runner be?
As long as you like. The runners here are built from repeated motifs, so you can add more until the runner fits your table.
