A handmade dress is a milestone project for many crocheters. This collection gathers our free crochet dress patterns for adults: lace dresses, a tiered sage dress, a summer sunflower dress, a sunset ombre mini, a babydoll, a forest fairy dress, a bell-sleeve dress for cooler days and a winter snowflake skirt.
Dresses take more yarn and time than tops, so the cards are ordered from the most approachable to the most advanced, using each designer's rating. Each card lists the hook and yarn. For tops, layers and baby garments, see the main crochet clothing pattern collection.

Choosing your first crochet dress
Start with a babydoll or flared shape. Loose silhouettes need less fitting. The sunflower yellow babydoll is fitted at the bust and flares below, and is rated beginner to intermediate by its designer.
Try a fairy or butterfly lace dress next. The forest fern fairy dress and the peach butterfly lace dress are also rated beginner to intermediate. The butterfly dress comes in seven sizes, from XS to 3XL.
Save the advanced pieces for later. The bell-sleeve dress, the ivory pearl fan dress and the snowflake skirt on a 6 mm hook are rated advanced. Expect complex stitch patterns and more shaping.
Planning a dress project
A dress is a big investment of yarn and time, so a little planning goes a long way:
- Buy all your yarn at once. Dye lots vary, and a different lot can show as a stripe across a skirt. Buy a little extra.
- Swatch, then wash the swatch. Cotton can grow or shrink when washed, and that changes the length of a long skirt. Measure the swatch after it dries.
- Measure bust, waist and hips. Compare them to the pattern's finished sizes. Many patterns here are designed with some negative ease at the bust, so read the fit notes carefully.
- Try it on before the skirt. If the dress is worked top-down, check the bodice fit before you start the skirt.
Yarn weight changes everything
| Yarn | Result | Patterns here |
|---|---|---|
| Fingering or sport | Fine lace, light drape, slow to work | Lace dresses, pearl fan dress |
| DK or cotton | Balanced drape and structure | Tiered, fairy and ombre dresses |
| Worsted | Warm, thicker, quicker | Bell-sleeve dress, snowflake skirt |
For summer dresses, cotton or cotton blends breathe best. For autumn and winter, worsted yarn and longer sleeves make a dress you can layer with tights.
Fit, lining and finishing
Lining: lace dresses are often sheer. A simple slip or a sewn fabric lining makes them wearable anywhere.
Weight and stretch: long crochet skirts are heavy, and they can lengthen over the day as gravity pulls the stitches. Cotton stretches less than acrylic. If you are between sizes, make the shorter length first and add rows after a test wear.
Blocking: blocking evens out stitches and opens up lace. Pin the dress to its measurements, mist it, and let it dry flat. Never hang a wet crochet dress, because the weight of the water will stretch it.
Before starting any dress, make sure you are confident with the basics. Our guide to single crochet is a helpful refresher.
Pairing dresses with layers
Dresses look great with a crochet layer on top. Browse our cardigans, shawls and capes for a matching piece, or a crochet top from the collection linked below for a coordinated set.
Frequently asked questions
Is a crochet dress hard to make?
It is a bigger project, but not necessarily harder. Choose a loose silhouette, like a babydoll or flared dress, and a pattern rated beginner to intermediate for your first dress.
How much yarn does a crochet dress need?
It depends on the size, yarn weight and length. Each pattern lists yarn amounts per size. Buy everything from the same dye lot, with a little extra.
Do crochet dresses stretch?
They can lengthen over time, especially in acrylic or long skirts. Cotton stretches less. Washing a swatch first shows how your yarn will behave.
Do I need to line a crochet dress?
Lace and open-stitch dresses are often sheer, so a lining or a slip is a good idea. Denser stitch patterns may not need one.
