A crochet top is one of the most rewarding garments to make: less yarn than a sweater, quicker than a dress, and you can wear it all summer. This collection gathers our free crochet top patterns: halter tops, crop tops, boho and fairy tops, a lace-up daisy top, an open-back top, a cropped mesh hoodie, a bikini and two matching festival sets with shorts.

Cards are ordered from easiest to most involved by the designer's own skill rating, with the hook and yarn listed for each. For dresses, cardigans and baby clothes, browse the rest of our handmade clothing for women and babies.

Your first crochet top

Four tops here are rated beginner to intermediate by their designers, and all use smooth DK, cotton or worsted yarn:

Halter tops are the gentlest start, because ties at the neck and back do most of the fitting for you.

Getting the fit right

Tops sit close to the body, so a little planning saves a lot of frogging:

  1. Measure your bust, and compare it to the finished measurements in the pattern, not just the size name. Each pattern explains how much ease to expect, and some designs are meant to fit with negative ease.
  2. Swatch in your real yarn. Cotton tops are especially sensitive to gauge. If your swatch is too big, go down a hook size; too small, go up.
  3. Try it on as you go. Most tops are worked in pieces or from the bottom up, so you can check the fit before adding ties or straps.
  4. Adjust length easily. For crop tops, you can usually add or remove rows before the shaping starts. Note what you changed for the second side.

Yarn for summer tops

YarnFeel and drapeGood for
Cotton (DK or sport)Crisp, cool, holds shape, little stretchHalter and crop tops, lace motifs
Cotton blendsSofter, a little more drapeEveryday tops and sets
Worsted acrylicWarm, thicker, very durableHoodies, autumn halters
Fine sport or fingeringLight, airy, delicate laceFairy and open-back tops

For summer wear, cotton or cotton blends are hard to beat: they breathe and do not stretch out in the heat. Wash cotton tops cool and dry them flat so they keep their shape.

Lace, mesh and coverage

Many summer tops use open lace or mesh stitches, which are beautiful but sheer. If you want more coverage, add a lining, wear a bralette or tank underneath, or work a denser stitch in the bust area. The bikini and the open-back top are designed for specific looks, so read the full pattern post before you start.

Advanced tops worth working up to

The ocean diamond halter on a 3 mm hook and the fairy top are rated advanced by their designers. Both use fine yarn and intricate lace. Make a simpler top first, so you are comfortable with gauge and fit, before tackling them.

For finishing touches, our headbands, bows and hats pair well with summer tops. If you want a longer silhouette, the dress and skirt patterns linked below use many of the same techniques.

Frequently asked questions

What is the easiest crochet top for beginners?

A halter top is usually the easiest: it is mostly a simple panel with ties, so the fit is forgiving. The butterfly halter and the boho halter here are good first projects.

What yarn is best for crochet tops?

Cotton or cotton-blend yarn in DK or sport weight. It is breathable, holds its shape, and suits summer wear.

How do I make a crochet top that fits?

Measure your bust, compare it to the pattern's finished measurements, and make a gauge swatch in your real yarn. Try the top on as you work and adjust length before the shaping.

Are crochet tops see-through?

Lace and mesh tops can be. Add a lining, wear a layer underneath, or choose a denser stitch for more coverage.
