Picture a round-bellied snowman in royal blue overalls, a floppy pompom hat tipped over his brow, sitting on your mantel with a slightly worried little face. That sweet, wide-eyed expression is the charm of this crochet snowman. The plush chenille yarn makes him soft enough to hug. This snowman amigurumi pattern is rated intermediate. The shaping is simple, but the mittens, the overalls and the face need a little care. He stands 9.5 inches (24 cm) tall with his hat, and every piece is worked in plush yarn on a 4.0 mm hook. Grab your yarn and letโs start stitching.
Texture and Stitch Notes
There is something undeniably cozy about the texture of plush chenille yarn. It creates a soft, fuzzy fabric that hides stitch definition slightly, giving your amigurumi a smooth, rounded appearance. Because the yarn is soft and stretchy, maintaining a snug tension is essential to prevent the fiberfill from showing through. This pattern relies on continuous spiral rounds for the main body and head, which creates a seamless tube. However, pay close attention to the invisible decreases; working through the front loops only keeps the fabric smooth and prevents unsightly holes. The contrast between the fluffy white body and the velvet blue overalls adds a lovely tactile dimension, making this a delightful project for texture lovers.

The design features a classic snowman body with integrated mitten arms, a separate royal blue velvet overall piece, and a floppy hat topped with a pompom. The facial features are created using embroidery and safety eyes, giving the snowman a charming, slightly worried expression.

Assembly

Putting Your Snowman Together
Shape the face. Thread a long needle with white cotton thread and knot the end. Insert the needle at the bottom center of the Body and Head and bring it out at the inner corner of one eye. Re-insert it at the opposite corner of the same eye and bring it out at the bottom of the head, where you started. Leave the thread attached, skip 1 stitch, and repeat for the second eye. Pull both threads together to draw the head in slightly around the eyes, then secure the threads at the bottom and cut them.
Dress him. Slip the Overalls onto the Body and Head. Sew the two Straps to the Overalls, crossing them at the back. Attach the Legs. Sew the two Legs to the front of the Overalls, about 10 stitches apart.
Add the Nose. Use the long orange tail to sew the Nose to the center of the face.
Embroider the eyebrows. Use dark brown cotton yarn to stitch a pair of eyebrows above the eyes.
Shape the mouth. Thread a long needle with dark brown cotton yarn. Insert it at the back of the head, at the center of the neck, and bring it out at one corner of the mouth. Re-insert it at the other corner of the mouth and bring it out at the back of the head, at the same spot as before. Pull both strands gently to draw in the mouth, tie them off in a knot at the back, trim the ends and tuck them inside.
Finish the Hat. Sew the Pompom to the tip of the Hat, then place the Hat on the head.
Decorate. Glue snowflakes, holly leaves and sugar berries to the Hat and Overalls as you like. Weave in all ends.
Tips

- Stuff in layers. Push fiberfill out toward the edges first, then add more in the center. This keeps the body and head round and prevents lumps.
- Check arm symmetry. On the body round where the arms are joined, tension varies from maker to maker, so lay the arms out and compare them before you finish the round.
- Keep your tension snug. Chenille yarn is soft and stretchy, and a snug stitch keeps stuffing from showing through.
- Make your decreases invisible. Work each decrease through the front loops only, so the fabric stays smooth.
- Stuff the legs firmly. Firm legs help your snowman sit up on his own.
FAQs
Can I use a different yarn weight?

While this pattern is designed for Super Bulky (CYC 6) plush chenille yarn, you can use other bulky yarns. However, changing the yarn weight will alter the finished size and the gauge. You may need to adjust your hook size to maintain the correct fabric density.
How do I keep the chenille yarn from splitting?
Chenille yarn can be soft and prone to splitting. Use a sharp crochet hook and try to insert the hook fully into the stitch rather than just the loops. If the yarn splits frequently, try slowing down your stitching speed.
Why are my arms uneven?

Arm placement depends heavily on your tension. When joining the arms in Round 26 of the body, lay the snowman flat and check that the arms are equidistant from the center and each other before completing the round. Adjust your tension if one side looks tighter than the other.
Can I make the snowman smaller?
To make a smaller version, you can use a lighter yarn weight (such as Worsted) and a smaller hook (such as 3.5 mm or 4.0 mm depending on your tension). However, you will need to adjust the stitch counts and round numbers to achieve the desired height.
How do I secure the safety eyes?

Always use safety eyes with secure backs, as recommended in the materials list. Insert the post through the fabric and press the washer on firmly. For extra security, especially if this is a gift for a child, you can add a small dot of clear-drying craft glue to the washer before pressing it on.
