Almost every amigurumi pattern online calls itself "easy". This page is stricter. These easy amigurumi patterns were picked because their designers rate them beginner, or because they are a single simple shape: a dome, a ball or a small one-color body. If you have just learned to crochet in the round, start here.
The list mixes animals, characters, keychains and seasonal toys, so there is something for every interest. Each card shows the hook, yarn and size from the pattern. When you are ready for more, our full amigurumi toy library has over a hundred patterns to grow into.

A beginner path: five toys, five new skills
Each step below adds one skill to the last, so by the end you will have every technique most amigurumi need.
- One shape, no parts: the chenille pumpkin for beginners or the minimalist jellyfish. You practice the magic ring, increases, decreases and stuffing.
- A tiny body with ears: the 5 cm mini bunny adds small parts that you sew on.
- A face that matters: the plush cow at about 3.5 inches or the hen teaches eye placement and a simple muzzle.
- Color changes: the watermelon doll changes color in clean blocks, round by round.
- Several parts and a pose: the deer, the frog or the crochet cat combine a head, body, legs and ears into one character.
Keychains, like the pizza, the octopus and the mini cat, fit in anywhere along this path. They are small, fast and great for practicing faces.
What you need to start
You do not need much:
- Yarn: a smooth worsted, DK or cotton yarn is easiest to see and count. Chenille and velvet yarns, used in many plush designs here, are soft and fast, but they hide stitches. If you choose one, mark every round.
- Hook: the size the pattern lists, usually 2.5 to 4.5 mm on this page. Amigurumi uses a smaller hook than usual so stuffing does not show through.
- Stitch markers: the most useful tool for beginners. Move one up to the first stitch of each round.
- Fiberfill stuffing, a yarn needle and scissors.
- Safety eyes or embroidery thread: use embroidery for toys meant for babies.
The five stitches behind every toy here
| Skill | What it does | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Magic ring | Starts a round piece with no hole | Pull the tail tight, then weave it in twice |
| Single crochet (sc) | Builds the dense fabric of amigurumi | Keep the tension even and snug |
| Increase (inc) | Two sc in one stitch, makes the piece grow | Spread increases evenly each round |
| Decrease (dec) | Two stitches worked together, closes the piece | The invisible decrease leaves fewer gaps |
| Working in a spiral | Rounds without joining | Count every round and use a marker |

Common beginner mistakes, and the fixes
Stuffing shows through: your hook is too big for your yarn. Go down half a millimeter.
The piece leans or twists: this is normal in spiral rounds. Your seams will drift slightly. Position the drift at the back of the toy.
The stitch count is off: you missed the first or last stitch of a round. Use a stitch marker and count after every round until it feels automatic.
Lumpy shape: add stuffing in small pieces and push it into the edges first. Stuff firmly, but not so tightly that the stitches stretch.
Next steps after your first toys
Small toys teach the skills; bigger projects use them. Once you have made two or three toys here, browse the mini keychain patterns for quick gifts, or try one of our kittens and plush cats as your first multi-part animal.
Frequently asked questions
What is the easiest amigurumi for a complete beginner?
A single shape with no extra parts, such as the pumpkin or the minimalist jellyfish. Both are worked in rounds and only need a magic ring, increases, decreases and stuffing.
Do I need to know how to crochet before starting amigurumi?
It helps to know the chain and single crochet first. Amigurumi uses mostly single crochet, worked in a spiral.
Why are amigurumi hooks so small?
A small hook makes tight stitches, so the stuffing stays hidden inside and the toy keeps its shape.
How long does a beginner amigurumi take?
The small toys here take a few hours to an evening, depending on your speed. Plush yarn grows faster than cotton.
