Not every amigurumi has to be an animal. Character amigurumi turn monsters, dragons, zombies, fruit and even pencils into little personalities with faces. This page gathers our free character amigurumi patterns: fantasy creatures, spooky friends, kawaii objects and a few fan favorites.

What sets these apart is detail. Expect more color changes, small accessories and carefully placed faces than a basic animal. Each card shows the designer's skill level, hook and yarn so you can judge the effort before you start. For animals and seasonal toys, go back to our main amigurumi pattern library.

Where to start with character amigurumi

Simple and cheerful: the watermelon doll rated beginner is about 10 to 12 cm tall in cotton or acrylic on a 3.5 mm hook. Its color blocks are worked in rounds, which makes it a gentle first character.

Kawaii objects: the two pencil toys and the mochi doll in milk cotton are mostly simple shapes. The personality comes from the face, so they are good practice for embroidery and eye placement.

Monsters and dragons: the plush dragon in chenille yarn and the monster costume dolls use thicker yarn on a 4 mm hook, so they grow quickly. Wings, horns and costume pieces add sewing time.

Spooky and detailed: the zombie, Larry the spider and the horror icon trio use smaller hooks (2.25 to 3.5 mm) and several colors. Save these for when you are comfortable changing colors mid-round.

Skills that make characters recognizable

Color changes: switch to the new color on the last yarn-over of the stitch before it starts. Keep the color-change jog at the back of the piece where you can.

Faces: pin eyes, nose and mouth before attaching anything. Step back, or take a photo with your phone; lopsided features are easier to spot on a screen.

Small parts: stuff small pieces lightly and sew them on with the tails you left when finishing off. Pin every part in place before you start sewing.

Proportions: most cute characters have a big head and a small body. If you change yarn or hook size, change it for every piece, or the head and body will no longer match.

A note on fan-favorite characters

Some patterns here are inspired by famous characters. Making them for yourself or as personal gifts is part of the fun of the craft. Selling finished pieces of trademarked characters is different: the characters belong to their owners, so check the rules where you sell before listing them. Original characters, like the monsters and the mochi, have no such limits beyond the designer's own pattern terms.

Characters for every season

Many characters here double as holiday decor. The zombie, spider and horror trio also appear in our Halloween collection. The mochi makes a sweet Christmas gift, and several characters come as keychain-sized minis, including a green monster and a superhero.

If the toy is for a baby or toddler, embroider the eyes instead of using safety eyes and skip small props, horns and accessories that could come loose.

Frequently asked questions

What is the easiest character amigurumi to make?

The watermelon doll is rated beginner by its designer. The pencil toys are also simple: they are mostly one long shape with a face.

Are character amigurumi harder than animal amigurumi?

Usually a little. They often need more color changes and small accessories. The basic stitches are the same, so if you can make a simple animal, you can make a character.

What yarn should I use for character amigurumi?

Cotton or milk cotton gives crisp color changes and neat faces. Chenille and velvet make soft, plush characters like the dragon and Pikachu, but hide your stitches.

Can I sell amigurumi of famous characters?

Trademarked characters belong to their owners, so selling finished copies can break those rights. Check the rules where you sell, and always respect the pattern designer's terms.
