A first woodland animal

Three patterns here are rated beginner by their designers, and all use plush yarn on a 3.5 or 4 mm hook:

After one of these, the red panda, the bee and the sleepy baby penguin are good next steps.

Teddy bears: plush or jointed

Bears are the classic toy, and the four here show two very different approaches:

StylePatternWhat makes it different
Plush and quickChenille teddy, crochet teddy bearBulky chenille or velvet on a 3.5โ€“4.5 mm hook
Heirloom and jointedTeddy bear in a red sweater2 mm hook, plastic joints, a knitted sweater
Bear cousinRed pandaVelvet yarn with a striped tail

The jointed teddy in a red sweater is the most advanced bear here. It uses joints so the arms and legs move, and the sweater is knitted on 3 mm needles. If you have never used toy joints, read the whole pattern before you start, because the joints go in before the limbs are closed.

Deer, fawns and forest friends

Deer and fawns are popular for autumn and winter. The fawn in a sweater, about 10 inches tall and Leah the fawn both use chenille-style yarn. Their spots are embroidered or worked as color changes, so plan your colors before you start.

The hedgehog uses loop stitch for its spines. Loop stitch is worked on wrong-side rows or rounds, so the loops pop out on the right side. Keep the loops the same length by wrapping them around one finger each time.

The reindeer also appears in our Christmas collection, and the owl comes in a pair with a chick.

Tips for wild animal details

  • Long necks and legs: stuff giraffe necks and deer legs firmly, a little at a time, so they do not bend under the head's weight.
  • Ears: small round ears say "bear", tall pointed ears say "deer" or "fox". Pin them first and adjust before you sew.
  • Stripes and spots: embroider them after stuffing for the cleanest lines, or use color changes for bold stripes, as on the red panda's tail.
  • Plush yarn: most patterns here use chenille or velvet. Mark the first stitch of every round, because these yarns hide your stitches.

Our single crochet guide is a good refresher on the stitch every animal here starts with.

Woodland nurseries and gifts

Woodland animals are a popular nursery theme. Bears, deer, owls and hedgehogs look lovely together on a shelf. For a matching set, use the same yarn family for every animal. Pair them with ducklings and lambs from our farm animal amigurumi for a mixed set.

For babies and toddlers, embroider eyes and noses instead of using safety eyes or safety noses, and skip toy joints, which have small parts.

Frequently asked questions

What is the easiest woodland animal amigurumi?

The chenille penguin, the O.Lenya deer and the emotional frog are all rated beginner by their designers.

How do I crochet a teddy bear with movable arms and legs?

Use plastic toy joints, as the jointed teddy in a red sweater does. Insert each joint before closing the limb and the body, then lock it firmly.

What is loop stitch, and is it hard?

Loop stitch is a single crochet worked with a loop of yarn pulled long around your finger. It is not hard, but it is slow, and it gives the hedgehog its spiky coat.

Which yarn is best for plush woodland animals?

Chenille or velvet yarn makes the softest animals and works up fast. Use the hook the pattern lists, so the fabric stays tight enough to hide the stuffing.
