Christmas Crochet Patterns

Handmade Christmas starts earlier than most of us plan for. This collection gathers all our free Christmas crochet patterns in one place: snowmen, Santa, gnomes and reindeer to sit on a shelf, wreaths for the door, small ornaments for the tree, and a few cozy gifts you can wrap.

Everything below is sorted by what you are making, and each card lists the skill level, hook size and finished size the designer gives in the pattern. That lets you match a project to the yarn you already have and the weeks left before December 25.

If you are new to crochet, start with the beginner-rated snowman worked on a 2 mm hook or the stocking ornament for the tree. Both are small, use only a few colors, and teach the basic shaping you will reuse in every other project here.

Ornaments are the fastest wins. A wreath for the front door takes the longest, because the base has to lie flat and hold its shape.

A simple timeline for a handmade Christmas

Crochet gifts always take longer than the pattern photo suggests, mostly because of finishing: sewing on parts, embroidering faces and weaving in ends. A loose plan keeps December calm.

  1. October: make the big pieces first. Door wreaths, the poinsettia placemat and napkin set and shelf characters like the gnome take the most rounds and the most sewing.
  2. Early November: start gifts with a deadline, such as baby hats for photos and anything you plan to post.
  3. Late November: batch ornaments. Make several stockings or bells in a row while the pattern is fresh in your head, then do all the finishing in one sitting.
  4. December: keep quick makes for last-minute gifts. The 15-minute wreath ornament built on a ring and the bell keychain fit in a lunch break.

Yarn that suits holiday projects

The patterns in this collection use a few distinct yarn families, and the choice changes how the finished piece looks:

  • Milk cotton and fine cotton give crisp stitches and clean color changes. That is why they appear in the stocking ornament, the trees and the poinsettia set. Cotton also holds its shape on a tree branch.
  • Chenille and velvet-style yarn make plush, huggable snowmen and the holiday trio. Stitches are hard to see in this yarn, so count carefully and use stitch markers every round.
  • Mohair-blend yarn on a large hook creates the fluffy loop-stitch texture of the furry tree worked on a 10 mm hook. It looks complex but uses a simple repeat.
  • Worsted or DK acrylic is the budget-friendly option for Santa and the reindeer, and it comes in every red and green you could want.

If you substitute yarn, change the hook too. Amigurumi needs a hook small enough that the stuffing does not show through the fabric. Ornaments and wreaths are more forgiving.

Finishing touches that make ornaments last

Hanging loops. Chain a loop from the same yarn and anchor it through several stitches, not just one. On heavier pieces, sew the loop through the inside of the fabric so it cannot pull out.

Flat, round wreaths. Wreath bases need even increases to stay flat. If yours ruffles, you have too many stitches; if it cups, too few. Pin the finished wreath flat, mist it lightly and let it dry before adding bows and trim.

Faces on small characters. Pin safety eyes in place and look at the face from a distance before you lock them. On the ushanka-hat snowman in velvet yarn and other plush pieces, eyes sink into the fabric, so place them a round higher than you think.

Gifts for little ones. Safety eyes, beads, pearls and wire, as used in some trees and stars here, are not suitable for babies and toddlers. Embroider eyes with yarn instead and skip wire and small decorations if the piece is a toy for a child under three.

If you need a refresher on the basics, see our guides to the foundation chain and single crochet, the two stitches nearly every pattern here is built on.

Frequently asked questions

What is the easiest Christmas crochet pattern for a beginner?

The snowman amigurumi and the stocking ornament are both rated beginner by their designers. They are small, use simple rounds of single crochet and need only a few colors.

How early should I start crocheting Christmas gifts?

For several gifts, start in October. Large pieces such as door wreaths and table sets take the longest, while small ornaments and keychains can be made in December.

Which yarn is best for crochet ornaments?

Cotton or milk cotton yarn holds its shape best and shows stitch detail clearly. Chenille and velvet yarns look soft and plush but hide stitches, so they suit snowmen and characters more than detailed ornaments.

Are crochet Christmas toys safe for babies?

Not when they use safety eyes, beads, pearls or wire. For babies and toddlers, embroider the eyes with yarn, sew every part on very securely and leave off small trims.

Can I sell items I make from these patterns?

Check each individual pattern post for the designer's terms before selling finished items, and never sell or share the pattern text itself.
